Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBC) has pressed the panic but ton as it races against time to raise adequate money to host the World Boxing Council (WBC) convention at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe from tomorrow.<\/p>\n
Sources indicated that the board might look for an alternative venue for the convention, which will likely attract delegates from over 20 countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven though the board paid a deposit to BICC, they still have a shortfall. Chances are that they will shift the venue. This means that the deposit they paid to BICC will go in vain,\u201d said the source.<\/p>\n
MPBCB spokesperson, Frank Chibisa, confirmed that they were yet to finalise payment to hire the facility from May 11 to 14.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have only paid a minimal amount and we need about K2 million to finalise the payment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chibisa called on stakeholders to rescue the board to safeguard the reputation of the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThings did not go as planned and we have now pressed the panic button. The reputation of the entire nation is at stake. We appeal to well-wishers and major stakeholders to come to our rescue. This will be the first time for WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman, to step in Africa and the boxing fraternity worldwide is looking at us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson admitted that they will change the venue if they do not get adequate funding.<\/p>\n
