The European Union (EU) has appealed to Malawi government to implement more reforms as a way of making sure that there is remarkable progress in the country.<\/p>\n
EU Ambassador to Malawi, Marchel Gerrmann, said that although the EU has worked with Malawi for 40 years, it is difficult to understand what is holding the country from making more progress.<\/p>\n
Gerrmann made the remarks in Lilongwe on Friday during Europe Day Celebrations.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do not pretend that we, as EU, have all answers. What I do know, however, is that there is much that can be done and there is no alternative to the many reforms that are needed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis includes reforms to make Malawi a more attractive place for businesses to invest and flourish. It includes reforms to make Malawi\u2019s public service more effective and accountable. It includes reforms to reduce corruption. In this respect, let me commend government foe recent progress in Public Finance Management and getting the IMF programme on track,\u201d Gerrmann said.<\/p>\n
He, however, pledged the EU\u2019s continued support to Malawi.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe EU member states remain committed to assist Malawi on its path to a more prosperous future. It is essential that we work closely together as neither of us can solve them on our own. It helps that the relationship between EU and Malawi is a genuine one based on mutual trust and respect and desire to work together for a better future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu, hailed the relationship that exists between Malawi and the EU.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe relations have been beneficial to both of us. At the moment, we are collaborating in many sectors including health, education governance and others. Like you heard from the ambassador, they have given support totalling to about \u20ac2 billion,\u201d Tembenu said.<\/p>\n
He, however, said it is the hope of all Malawians to move towards relying on trade.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy hope, and I believe it is the hope of all Malawians, is that that one day we will do away with aid and have trade between us and Europe. I want us to celebrate one day that we don\u2019t rely on donor aid,\u201d Tembenu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
