Japan Government on Wednesday handed over a newly-constructed hostel to Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
The hostel, situated near Kamuzu Institute for Sports (Kis), has been constructed through K43 million (US$ 97,252), under the Grant Assistance for Cultural Grassroots Projects.<\/p>\n
In his remarks during the handover ceremony, Japanese Ambas s ado r to Malawi, Shuichiro Nishioka, said they supported Moc to ease challenges which the committee faces to accommodate athletes during training and competitions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe that through this project, more athletes will be motivated to participate and work hard in various sports codes and also that the number of athletes to compete internationally will increase. The facility will assist Moc to accommodate athletes in a favourable environment all the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He appealed to Moc to take care of the facility and use it for its intended purpose.<\/p>\n
Minister of Sports and Culture, Grace Chiumia, hailed Japan for promoting sports in Malawi through various projects.<\/p>\n
Moc President, Oscar Kanjala, said the construction of the facility would ease accommodation challenges, which athletes face when preparing for competitions.<\/p>\n
The hostel will mainly be used to accommodate athletes when preparing for major competitions. It has 10 rooms each with four beds, a kitchen, lounge, matron\u2019s room, shower rooms and rest rooms.<\/p>\n
