{"id":23683,"date":"2016-05-04T11:28:27","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T09:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=23683"},"modified":"2016-05-04T11:28:27","modified_gmt":"2016-05-04T09:28:27","slug":"yabwanya-resurfaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/05\/04\/yabwanya-resurfaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Yabwanya resurfaces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A week after resigning as Karonga United trustee, Willy Yabwanya Phiri, has resurfaced to form Karonga Giants FC, saying it was a continuation of his football development agenda in his home district.<\/p>\n<p>Yabwanya, who alongside Wilkins Mijiga and Tiya Somba- Banda, is awaiting Football Association of Malawi (Fam) verdict on a case in which they are being accused of taking football matters to a conventional court, said he exited United because the team was being used as a battle-ground to fight him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a sense, I would say Karonga Giants were already there as it has just evolved from Yabwanya FC which was a feeder team for Karonga United,\u201d Yabwanya explained in a telephone interview from his Canada base on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext season, I want the team to play in the Simama league. I resigned from Karonga United as I did not want to be part of something which [Fam top official] is using to fight me. I wish Karonga United all the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Times <\/em>could not publish the identity of the Fam official due to lack of evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Yabwanya added that Giants will be run by former United officials such as Desire Kibombwe, Amidu Yabwanya and John Dyton.<\/p>\n<p>However, United Chairperson, Alufeyo Chipanga, Tuesday dismissed Yabwanya\u2019s allegations that a Fam official was behind the restructuring of United\u2019s executive committee in a bid to frustrate him out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is sad news that Yabwanya left the team. He helped us in many ways, but what I know is that he resigned due to personal reasons. Anyway, we have been assured of support by Bishop Simama and all the trustees,\u201d Chipanga explained Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Region Football Association Chairperson, Lameck Khonje, said he was yet to learn about Giants\u2019 birth, adding that it was good for Karonga football development.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Yabwanya stated that he resigned from United due to personal reasons, leaving the team in the hands of other trustees Bishop Simama, Chief Kyungu, Kossam Munthali and Speaker of Parliament, Richard Msowoya<\/p>\n<p>Fam Disciplinary Committe is yet to decide in a case in which Yabwanya, Mijiga and Somba-Banda are accused of dragging a football matter to an ordinary court of law, contrary to Fifa statutes.<\/p>\n<p>The three obtained an injunction from Blantyre High Court to stop December\u2019s Fam elections in Mangochi District. The injunction was vacated.<\/p>\n<p>If found at fault, the officials risk a football ban, but Yabwanya insists he is ready to fight.
