The Lilongwe derby involving Silver Strikers and Civo United grossed a meagre K3.5 million at Civo Stadium on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Silver and Civo each earned K 654,000, whereas the rest of the money was shared among Super League of Malawi (Sulom) and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n
At the same stage last season, the derby grossed K5 million at Silver Stadium.<\/p>\n
Civovice-General Secretary, Ronald Chiwawula, expressed displeasure with the gate revenue.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe expected more than K3.5 million from the derby but we suspect that poor turnout contributed to the low gate revenue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Silver Acting-General Secretary, Thabo Chakaka- Nyirenda, said his club noted some anomalies during the game and suggested that e-ticketing is the only solution to improve gate revenue.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf clubs want to maximise gate revenue, then e-ticketing is the way to go,\u201d Chakaka- Nyirenda said.<\/p>\n
Sulom Treasurer, Tiya Somba-Banda, also said the low turnout was surprising.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe turnout was not as expected for a derby and the revenue reflects the poor patronage,\u201d Somba-Banda said.<\/p>\n
The Lilongwe derby is slowly turning into just an ordinary game because it has lost its lustre in recent years.<\/p>\n
Silver defeated their rivals 2-1 to collect first maximum points of the season. Binwell Katinji and Thuso Paipi netted for the Central Bankers, whereas Nelson Kangunje scored the consolation for Civo.<\/p>\n
In Blantyre derby, Be Forward Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets drew 1-1 on Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium, whereas Dwangwa United and Mafco drew 2-2 at Chitowe on Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
