{"id":23485,"date":"2016-04-29T12:56:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T10:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=23485"},"modified":"2016-04-29T12:58:20","modified_gmt":"2016-04-29T10:58:20","slug":"ngo-gcn-lobbies-for-women-commissioners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/04\/29\/ngo-gcn-lobbies-for-women-commissioners\/","title":{"rendered":"NGO-GCN lobbies for women commissioners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>N<\/strong>GO Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN) has appealed to President Peter Mutharika and political parties to consider women when appointing Malawi Electoral Commission commissioners.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre, permanent committee chairperson for NGO-GCN Emma Chanika said they want women to be included in decision-making positions to honour Section 11 of the Gender Equality Act of 2013 and Sadc obligations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that consultations between the President and political parties have already started to solicit nominees from parties for the President to appoint as commissioners, we call upon nominating stakeholders to nominate women as well [because] the current status does not reflect well on women representation in Mec commission,\u201d Chanika said.<\/p>\n<p>Chanika further said only three out of 10 commissioners are women representing 30 percent as well as in Mec management where currently out of nine management members there is only one woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur fear is that women concerns on election matters may likely not receive adequate attention given their low representation,\u201d said Chanika.<\/p>\n<p>However, Programmes Officer for NGO-GCN Anthony Nkupira said they regret the rise in number of cases of political violence in the country whose victims are mostly women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe, therefore, condemn in the strongest terms these barbaric acts and call upon all stakeholders such as political parties, the police, traditional leaders and government to ensure political stability and also condemn such acts,\u201d said Nkupira.<\/p>\n<p>Nkupira further said the few greedy individuals should not dent the country\u2019s politics as a dirty game a development that would discourage women from participating in politics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NGO Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN) has appealed to President Peter Mutharika and political parties to consider women when appointing Malawi Electoral Commission commissioners.
