Northern Region Boxing Committee (NRBC) says it needs K800, 000 to complete the construction of a new boxing ring at Obrigado Leisure Centre in Mzuzu City.<\/p>\n
NRBC Chairperson, Stewart Moyo, who is also the owner of the leisure centre, said he and well-wishers were using their own funds to construct the ring. Despite being under construction, the ring still hosts bouts.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going into the boxing season which normally starts around this month, but we lack a good ring and funds to complete the one we are constructing. We appeal to boxing lovers and companies in the country and the region to give us a hand,\u201d Moyo said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Moyo\u2019s appeal for help contradicts his Treasurer, Wilson Gama, who claimed three months ago that his company, Megastructure Construction Company, bought a K1.5 million mobile boxing ring that he was to donate to Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) for use in the region.<\/p>\n
Gama was quoted as saying that he bought the ring as part of his contribution to the sport in the region.<\/p>\n
However, Moyo said he was in the dark about the matter.<\/p>\n
\u201cGama is my Treasurer, but he has never told me anything about buying a ring. I am surprised that I am getting this from you,\u201d Moyo said.<\/p>\n
However, Gama insisted that the ring was available, but he was irked by Malawi Professional Boxing Committee on some matters, which he did not disclose.<\/p>\n
Phillip Ngwira of Ken-One Boxing Promotions in Mzuzu said the unavailability of a standard ring in the city greatly affects them as most professional boxers refuse to play in Mzuzu using the unfinished ring.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the leisure centre is expected to host a non-title bout between Malani Kayuni and Ernest Banda, both from the Central Region, on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Baghdadi Mwamlima Boxing Promotions will host the bout to be supported by a contest between Mwayi Kamanga and Emmanuel Chanza.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
