President Peter Mutharika has challenged the country\u2019s water boards to consider investing in irrigation farming.<\/p>\n
Mutharika made the call in Salima during the commissioning of the Lakeshore Water Supply Project.<\/p>\n
He said his administration sees agriculture as one sector that can help turn around the country from being an importing and consuming nation to a producing and exporting one.<\/p>\n
He therefore said water boards in the country were well placed to take advantage of their expertise and invest in irrigated agriculture to help the country achieve food sustainability.<\/p>\n
\u201cWater boards cannot just be supplying water only for drinking or for watering flowers and home gardens. You should also seriously consider investing in irrigated agriculture,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He urged the Central Region Water Board to come up with a plan on the matter by June this year.<\/p>\n
Mutharika also commended the Board\u2019s engineers for designing the K6 billion infrastructure.<\/p>\n
He said his administration\u2019s push for community college was aimed at developing local skills such as these that could help power the country\u2019s development through sectors such as water supply.<\/p>\n
He said government will keep investing in water supply projects to ensure that Malawians have safe and clean water, in keeping with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n
He added that a reliable water supply system was also an important ingredient in fostering foreign direct investment.<\/p>\n
But Mutharika warned people against vandalism of the infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis facility is for you. It is not for government. Therefore you should look after it. Report any acts of vandalism. And also stop illegal connections and make sure that you pay bills because the board needs money to deliver better services and expand its infrastructure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The facility is meant to serve about 38,000 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
