General Alliance Insurance Limited has pledged continued financial support to the sport of squash in the country.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s Corporate Development Manager, Hastings Kapesa, made the pledge over the weekend at the end of a three-day General Alliance Squash Tournament held at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe organisation of the tournament was impressive and we will continue supporting squash as we have been doing always,\u201d he said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
During the tournament, invincible James Matewere underlined his class and ruthlessness when he retained the General Alliance Squash championship for the third successive time after humbling Julius Taulo by three straight sets.<\/p>\n
It was a repeat of last year\u2019s final, and a lot was expected from Taulo as he attempted to stop the left-handed Matewere from defending the trophy.<\/p>\n
However, the match proved to be a one-way traffic as Taulo failed to contain Matewere\u2019s ace and serves.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be honest, it was an easy tournament for me. I was well-prepared and I never struggled throughout the tournament. The score line is an indication of how easy I won,\u201d said Matewere, who defeated revamped Chiku Mkutumula in the semifinal.<\/p>\n
Matewere thanked General Alliance for supporting the tournament for the fifth successive time.<\/p>\n
Taulo, who defeated his younger brother, Aubrey, in the semifinal, conceded defeat and promised to bounce back strongly next year.<\/p>\n
Squash Malawi Vice-President, Gordon Benbow, won the Plate Division of the competition ahead of second-placed Chembe Matewere and third-placed James Chapukira.<\/p>\n
Benbow said they were excited with the strides junior players have made in squash.<\/p>\n
