Despite making noise of improving players’ welfare, Super League clubs have ignored Mpira Sacco project aimed at assisting footballers to embrace a saving culture.<\/p>\n
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Vice-President, Daud Suleman, confirmed that despite massive sensitisation campaigns, only Mzuni FC, Azam Tigers and Civo United have applied for the project.<\/p>\n
“We have the same problem that clubs are reluctant to adopt some important projects. Maybe we need to sensitise them again,” said Suleman during the week.<\/p>\n
Surprisingly, giants Be Forward Wanderers, Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers are among the clubs that have ignored the project.<\/p>\n
Apart from the Mpira Sacco, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has established a Players’ Welfare Fund which will be financed by gate revenue share.<\/p>\n
Chairperson of the Players’ Welfare Committee, Gift Gunda, said the Mpira Sacco is a component in the Players’ Welfare Fund.<\/p>\n
“As a committee, we want to continue with what Sulom started on the<\/p>\n
Mpira Sacco. We need to encourage the players to save,” Gunda said.<\/p>\n
Former Players Association Chairperson, Ojukwu Malunga, said the Mpira Sacco must still be pursued. Many retired players are increasingly being rendered destitute.<\/p>\n
There are many key steps that have to be taken to ensure that operational and legal requirements are met for Mpira Sacco to become fully-registered and licensed by Muscco and Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
