In a drive to meet this year\u2019s requirement that each person should plant approximately four trees in contribution to national projection of 60 million trees, Mulanje district has so far planted over two million trees through various reforestation initiatives.<\/p>\n
President Peter Mutharika launched the 2015\/16 National Forestry Season in Ntcheu as part of efforts to raise awareness about the importance of reforestation under the theme \u2018Arrest Deforestation \u2013 Plant Trees and Conserve Forests.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Mulanje when Nature Conservation for Humanitarian Support Organisation (Nacohuso) led Waluma and Luwanje communities in a tree planting exercise, Mulanje District Forestry Assistant Modesta Zalimbana disclosed that the achievement is as a result of collaborative efforts among concerned stakeholders in the district.<\/p>\n
She called on the communities in the district to keep planting trees in places where they source water like boreholes and also protect the trees.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlanting trees is one thing and protecting them to grow is another. Let us make sure that we protect the trees up to maturity,\u201d said Zalimbana.<\/p>\n
Nacohuso Executive Director Damson Chelewani said among others, targeted communities have been given seeds to prepare tree nurseries.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe communities were also provided with equipment to assist them in coming up with nurseries. There is also a component of training that enables communities to handle nurseries,\u201d said Chelewani disclosing that plans are underway for another initiative aimed at finding markets for the trees so that producing communities should benefit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
