Blantyre Water Board has been hit hard by vandalism as the utility body is losing over K40 million per month.<\/p>\n
The utility body\u2019s spokesperson, Priscilla Mateyu, has confirmed the development saying it is negatively affecting the board in its effort to increase access to piped water.<\/p>\n
The areas that are registering increased cases of vandalism are high density areas like Bangwe, Mpemba, Chileka, Chirimba, Ndirande and Manje among others.<\/p>\n
According to Mateyu, the suspected vandals target water infrastructure like pipes and metres.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe scope of the damage due to vandalism is very big because at the end of the day, it is not only the pipes or metres that are stolen, but we also lose water. If we talk in monetary terms we are losing over K40 million a month and this is quite a big loss,\u201d disclosed Mateyu.<\/p>\n
The BWB spokesperson said currently, her organisation has stepped up monthly campaign meetings with traditional leaders and the police to sensitise the communities on the dangers of vandalising water infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are appealing to the public to desist from this behaviour, and safeguard the equipment, so that we can all have [access] to clean water to overcome waterborne diseases,\u201d appealed Mateyu.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Blantyre City Council (BCC) spokesperson, Anthony Kasunda, has also expressed concern on the same vice claiming that it was derailing development in the city.<\/p>\n
Kasunda said people vandalised street lights from Kandodo Corner Shop to Kameza Round About.<\/p>\n
