Malawi is to get a US$35 million drought response package from the African Development Bank (AfDB), the bank\u2019s president Akinwumi Adesina said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters in Blantyre at the end of a two-day visit to Malawi, Adesina said of the amount, US$1 million is for immediate assistance, US$7 million for fast response and US$27 million for projects to deal with food insecurity in Malawi.<\/p>\n
During his visit, Adesina, among other things held a meeting with President Peter where he assured Mutharika that the bank remains committed to its long standing partnership with Malawi.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here because we want to fully support you to meet thechallenges facing the country. The bank will increase its support to energy, agriculture andinfrastructure. We need to transform agriculture in Malawi and get young peopleinto agriculture\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Adesina commended government for, among other things, its tenacity in tackling the challenges under difficult circumstances and for the remarkable reform efforts that have been made.<\/p>\n
President Mutharika has since said that Malawi recognises the role the bank plays in African economies, particularly in breaking the circle of food insecurity and in the development of infrastructure and the private sector.<\/p>\n
Since 1969, the AfDB has financed more than 100 operations in Malawi to the tune of over US$1.2 billion.<\/p>\n
Its current portfolio comprises a total commitment value of US$310 million with the infrastructure sector, including transport, water and energy accounting for 60 percent of total commitments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
