Former vice president Khumbo Kachali and People\u2019s Party former vice president (North) Harry Mkandawire, continue playing hide and seek on the construction of a cell at Mzuzu Prison, a project which they promised in 2012.<\/p>\n
The two pledged to construct the block in 2012 when former president Joyce Banda visited the inmates at Mzuzu Prison.<\/p>\n
According to prison officials, the block can accommodate 250 inmates thus reducing the congestion by almost half.<\/p>\n
Since the promise was made, the two have been giving excuses on why they were not finishing the project.<\/p>\n
Kachali said early this year that he would hand over the prison cell on February 28, 2016 on his wife\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Kachali admitted that the project was still incomplete and said he would finish it by July this year and hand it over before next rainy season.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is true that the project stopped but it is not because of money. The issue is that I was engaged since January. My brother too was busy and no-one could go and monitor the project. That work needs one of us to be there because what is remaining is to fix the doors, glasses, painting and other things,\u201d argued Kachali.<\/p>\n
Kachali also attributed the delay to lack of commitment from Mkandawire whom he said abandoned the project although he had promised Malawians to construct the prison cell.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople heard when we promised the inmates that we are going to construct the cell but few months later my colleague (Mkandawire) changed and said he did not promise. Therefore, I continue with the project myself up to date. I thought of opening it on February 28 this year during my wife\u2019s birthday but I failed because I was too busy. Remember that we are just coming from parliament. But I will finish the work,\u201d said Kachali.<\/p>\n
