Airtel Malawi has donated K4.2 million to the Malawi chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa- Malawi) to carter for the 2016 World Press Freedom Day celebrations slated for May at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi.<\/p>\n
Presenting the donation in Lilongwe yesterday, Airtel Malawi Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, said this was the seventh year running the company has remained the main sponsor for the event and that this is because the company recognises the role of the media in the promotion of democracy and economic development in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cApart from providing checks and balances, the media is equally instrumental in setting the agenda and driving various indicators that drive the economy of this country and in the business sector,\u201d said Kamoto.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is therefore imperative for us to support the growth of the media to enable the industry to register continued progress,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said Airtel Malawi also celebrates World Press Freedom Day with the media because, apart from using the opportunity to engage and interact with a cross section of media practitioners, the company also uses the event to underscore its commitment to continue playing a leading role in the development of journalism and the media in the country.<\/p>\n
Receiving the donation, Misa Malawi board member, Wiza Ngoma, thanked Airtel for being one of Misa- Malawi\u2019s trusted partners since 2009.<\/p>\n
\u201cAirtel has always been with us and we are so thankful for their support which has enabled us to successfully hold the event every year for the past seven years,\u201d Ngoma said.<\/p>\n
Among other things, the money will carter for the Business and Economics Journalist of the Year Award and other logistical costs related to the event.<\/p>\n
World Press Freedom Day falls on May 3 every year internationally but this year\u2019s commemoration will, in Malawi, take place on May 7.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
