{"id":21632,"date":"2016-03-29T13:11:33","date_gmt":"2016-03-29T11:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=21632"},"modified":"2016-03-29T13:11:33","modified_gmt":"2016-03-29T11:11:33","slug":"lupachi-achieves-odf-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/03\/29\/lupachi-achieves-odf-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Lupachi achieves ODF status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nine village heads in hard-to-reach area of Lupachi, T\/A Kafuzira in Nkhotakota have received certificates for achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.<\/p>\n<p>Health Surveillance As\u00adsistant for the area Lawrence Kaulimbo said the community approached Wildlife and Envi\u00adronmental Society of Malawi (Wesm) in 2011 to assist them on water and sanitation fol\u00adlowing frequent water-borne diseases due to lack of safe water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had only two function\u00ading boreholes serving 10,500 population which also had only 179 pit latrines but with\u00adout covers and hand washing facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrently, we have 19 boreholes and 1,786 out of 1,896 households in this area have toilets with covers and hand washing facilities. All four schools in this area also have ecosan toilets,\u201d said Kaulimbo.<\/p>\n<p>Wesm Dwangwa branch manager Ockens Chipeta said they decided to concentrate much on the nine village heads who are all under group head\u00adman Katumbi to draw lessons to input into T\/A level strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited with the re\u00adsponse and we have noted that it will be possible to declare the whole T\/A Kafuzira ODF by November this year,\u201d said Chipeta.<\/p>\n<p>He said they have managed to achieve the status because they worked with local lead\u00aders, health surveillance assis\u00adtants and district coordination team on water, sanitation and hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have trained extension workers, artisans and area me\u00adchanics on various water and sanitation aspects for the sus\u00adtenance of the ODF status in the area,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>T\/A Kafuzira said she was glad that the area had achieved the status describing it as a sign that the area is geared to deal with water borne diseas\u00ades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny household without a toilet was fined one goat.
