With the issue of climate change taking centre stage in the world, visual artists in the country decided to join the campaign by creating artworks on climate change.<\/p>\n
The visual artists put together their climate change artworks which they exhibited at Kwa Haraba Art Gallery and Caf\u00e9 in Blantyre on Friday through to today under the theme \u2018Climate change is real.\u2019<\/p>\n
Visual Arts Association of Malawi (Vaam) artists in the Southern Region once again came together to tackle the subject of climate change.<\/p>\n
However, despite exhibiting classic paintings, batiks and bead artworks, a few people patronised the exhibition on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n
One of the artists Cassim Mdoka, who exhibited among others, pencil artworks depicting deforestation, said it was unfortunate that not many people came on Friday and Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had a good number of foreigners coming in. But it\u2019s been disappointing in terms of patronage from locals. So we hope Malawians will join us on Sunday (yesterday) and Monday (today). It\u2019s not always about buying but they can just come and sample and that will motivate us,\u201d said Mdoka.<\/p>\n
Vaam General Secretary Gilbert Mpakule said they were happy to have tackled climate change this time around.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs artists we also have a duty to tackle different issues through our artworks. Climate change is an issue which we are talking about at the moment; we are talking about rains not coming in time, floods and many other challenges,\u201d said Mpakule.<\/p>\n
He said Vaam they have also held exhibitions on gender-based violence and health.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs artists we want to take centre stage in tackling various issues so this time we thought of climate change. Climate change has affected everyone and so we want to show some of the things which are contributing to climate change and you may wish to know that artworks will always stand out,\u201d said Mpakule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
