Despite clubs taking Super League of Malawi (Sulom) to task over below par servicers, the clubs are actually crippling the league runners operations as they owe Sulom K23, 682,000 in affiliation fees and transfer processing fees dating back to 2013.<\/p>\n
Information sourced by Malawi News indicate that giants Mighty Be Forward Wanderers, Blue Eagles and Big Bullets top the list of the clubs yet to pay the debts to Sulom.<\/p>\n
Sulom treasurer Tiya Somba -Banda, in an interview on Thursday, confirmed of the staggering amount in arrears.<\/p>\n
In total, Nomads owe Sulom K2,581,000 while Eagles and Bullets were yet to honour K1, 611,000 and K1, 482,000 respectively as of April 30, 2015.<\/p>\n
Silver Strikers and Red Lions owe Sulom about K1, 386, 000 and K1, 333,000 for affiliation fee and processing fees respectively.<\/p>\n
As of December 31, 2014, the clubs had combined arrears of K7, 482,000 with the league governing body but the figure has increased because only Surestream FC have paid 2015 affiliation fee, which is pegged at K700, 000 per team.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, the teams are also yet to get K1milllion subventions from Sulom, which the sponsors often stress that it is not for paying affiliation fee but rather for administration at the clubs.<\/p>\n
Somba-Banda said the club\u2019s failure to pay the dues is hampering the league governing body\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe pay referees\u2019 transport and meals every week a minimum<\/p>\n
of K250, 000 on top of dues which are K8 million per season, therefore, we squeeze ourselves and we end up borrowing to finance our operations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Somba-Banda, absence of enforcement gives the clubs a leeway to take advantage and abscond in honouring the arrears.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, the current constitution is silent on the issue. Fortunately, we are going into a constitution review process and the regulation part will be considered,\u201d added Somba-Banda.<\/p>\n
In an interview on Thursday, Wanderers general secretary, Mike Butao, said the club is ready to pay if indeed Wanderers have arrears with Sulom.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are ready to pay, but the problem is that Sulom always make verbal claims, they don\u2019t give us financial statements so how can we know that we owe Sulom such amount of money?\u201d said Butao.<\/p>\n
On his part, Eagles team manager, Gabriel Chirwa, acknowledged that his club owed Sulom money but was quick to say that the figure could be on the lower side.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn our part, we always honour our debts but we can only do that once our funds are ready,\u201d said Chirwa on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
When contacted on Thursday, Bullets vice general secretary, Titha Mandiza, expressed ignorance on the matter.<\/p>\n
Apart from the league teams, some of the teams that were relegated three or four seasons ago still owe Sulom some arrears.<\/p>\n
Details show that Mponela and Dwangwa United owe the league governing body K470, 000 and K219, 000 respectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
