Ash Godambe and Connie Muguvu-Karuku overcame emotions to lift inaugural Bash Memorial Golf tournament honours at Blantyre Sports Club on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Bash Automotive Limited organised the tournament in memory of the company\u2019s managing director-designate, late Bashir Shariff Jnr.<\/p>\n
He died a few days before taking over the management of the Blantyre company.<\/p>\n
Therefore, emotions were to be expected during the golf event.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, in the men\u2019s category, Godambe emerged as the winner after collecting two birdies.<\/p>\n
With a handicap of seven, Godambe collected 20-stableford points to beat a field of 34 golfers.<\/p>\n
Steve Kamanga finished as the runner-up with 17 points, while James Katunga was third with 16 points.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was here for a different assignment and I decided to play. It ended up being a pretty day for me on the golf course,\u201d said the Lilongwe-based golfer, Godambe.<\/p>\n
In the ladies\u2019 category, Muguvu-Karuku, with handicap-17, beat six female golfers with 14-stableford points.<\/p>\n
Her runner-up, Harriet Marian with a handicap of 35, finished with 15 points.<\/p>\n
Alfred Chikale posted 20-stableford points to count out Peter Lumbe (15 points) to the second slot in the juniors\u2019 category.<\/p>\n
Vanessa Mtupa was the lone contestant in the girls\u2019 section. Playing off handicap 30, Matupa gathered three points.<\/p>\n
Bash Automotive Limited managing director, Bashir Shariff Snr, said they organised the contest to celebrate the life of his first-born son, who died on March 20 last year, 11 days before taking over the company.<\/p>\n
\u201cI promised my son that he would take over my business once he turned 18, but unfortunately, he died 11 days before that time. I did not understand his death. However, we have to celebrate his life in a special way, hence this tournament, which will be conducted annually in his memory,\u201d Bashir Snr said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
