Several artists including veteran singer Maria Chidzanja-Nkhoma and visual artist Elson Kambalu will Thursday be presented with certificates of recognition for their tremendous work in the creative industry at a function to be held in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
For a long time the creative industry has cried for recognition but nothing has come up but now some organisations are coming out to recognise the works of different artists.<\/p>\n
The artists will be awarded with certificates by Rainseekers Arts and Education Centre which is spearheaded by former deputy director of culture Bernard Kwilimbe.<\/p>\n
Kwilimbe, who is a veteran in the creative industry, confirmed the development yesterday saying this is the second congregation for the Rainseekers Arts and Education Centre event.<\/p>\n
According to Kwilimbe, who is the Principal and Initiator, Rainseekers Arts and Education Centre hosts the Jane Adams Education Centre and that apart from the awards ceremony, they will also hold the nursery and primary school end of term open day.<\/p>\n
Kwilimbe said the Rainseekers Arts In Education Conservatoire will award certificates of recognition to individuals who have, with time, championed the cause for attaining their aspirations in life and acted as role models through hard work, scholarship, patience, wisdom, creativity and courage among others.<\/p>\n
Kambalu, who is currently in Tanzania said he was happy to be one of those to be recognised.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am aware of the event, its unfortunate I won\u2019t be available. But then this means a lot other than money. A recognition is an encouragement and even people who look up to you especially in the arts world will be happy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The visual artist, who was also voted the best in the arts in the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Innovations Awards in December last year said he was happy that the arts were now slowly being recognised.<\/p>\n
Kwilimbe, who has a teaching background before he started being actively involved in the arts, said Rainseekers Arts in Education Conservatoire is a teacher, social-cultural animator, artisan, artist and leadership education initiative.<\/p>\n
He said this is based on the principle of providing basic management education for development as a way of complimenting the nation\u2019s socio-economic development agenda.<\/p>\n
Apart from Kambalu, some of the visual artists to be recognised are Chrisford Chayera, Noah Kapitapita and Cuthy Medi.<\/p>\n
In the music category apart from Chidzanja-Nkhoma, who is also a renowned broadcaster, the others to be recognised are Garven Moya, Lester Mwathunga, Dam Dam Longwe and Conqueror Thawe.<\/p>\n
The others set to be awarded with certificates are James Kitchen, who has played a key role in uplifting theatre in the country, Canon Reverend Father Christopher Mwawa, Martha Hilda Chiyamwaka, Mary Yisah, Zidy Medi, Neema Kandoole and Dr Afunani Dunstan Malithano.<\/p>\n
The event is set to be spiced up by several performances from among others, Music Crossroads \u2013 Hear Us Children Dance, Song and Music, Nyasaland Arts Theatre, Neil Nayar and ethno-musician Charles Chavalamangwere Mkanthama.<\/p>\n
Kwilimbe said the Rainseekers Arts In Education Conservatoire dates back to December 1975 when he was at Blantyre Teachers Training College.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe named it Rainseekers because there were no rains that year and it was the time we were doing cultural extravaganzas and we went on to record our performances on MBC. And again the same name came in because of a group in UK known as the Seekers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kwilimbe said having retired, he decided to go back to teaching and that the centre is beyond an academy with artisan leadership education among others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
