The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has suspended its Regional Treasurer for the north, Happy Kumwenda, on disciplinary grounds following last week\u2019s incident where he was allegedly found with another man\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n
Confirming the development, DPP General Secretary Ecklen Kudontoni, said in a telephone interview yesterday, that the party is disciplining Kumwenda, who is also board member for Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), in order to institute its independent investigation into the matter which he said risks tarnishing the party\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a lot of issues concerning our member Kumwenda and after consultations within the party, it has been decided that he be relieved of his duties and called for disciplinary hearing. But this does not mean we are firing him as some quarters are putting it,\u201d explained Kudontoni who said the suspension is with immediate effect.<\/p>\n
He, however, said the decision to fire or keep the estranged leader will be made depending on the evidence that the party will gather on the issue and also after he presents his side of the story.<\/p>\n
Kumwenda said he has not received any communication from the party on the matter but conceded to have received a call from Kudontoni. He would not divulge details of the conversation.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know anything about that because currently, I am at the hospital attending to a number of issues. I got a call from the General Secretary sometime during the day and I told him we couldn\u2019t talk for the same reason that I have told you,\u201d said Kumwenda.<\/p>\n
He, however, condemned the media for tarnishing his image in the city and disclosed that since the incident was reported he is not living in peace.<\/p>\n
Last week Kumwenda was held by police after he was allegedly found in a house with Mirriam Chembe Mkandawire wife to Victor Mkandawire who had mounted surveillance following rumours of the affair.<\/p>\n
This came just three months after Kumwenda was shot by unknown people on the night of December 28, 2015 at his house.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
