Sheriffs, Tuesday morning, pounced on Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) headquarters in Blantyre and impounded two ten-tonne van vehicles and a Toyota Hiace minibus over the commission\u2019s failure to pay debts to some service providers.<\/p>\n
Three companies namely Universal Trading Company, Platinum Solutions and Transworld Radio dragged the electoral body to court, and towards the end of last year, the High Court ordered the commission to pay a total of K90 million in services rendered.<\/p>\n
However, Mec failed to comply with the order which prompted the court to issue a warrant of execution in January this year, according to Judiciary spokesperson, Mlenga Mvula.<\/p>\n
\u201cMec owes Universal Trading Company about K80 million, Platinum Solutions is owed about K9.9 million while Transworld Radio is owed about K1 million. These three companies lodged a complaint sometime back and in November last year, the High Court ordered the commission to pay what it owes these service providers, which Mec has not done to date. So, indeed sheriffs went there this morning and have impounded three of the commission\u2019s vehicles,\u201d Mvula said.<\/p>\n
Mec spokesperson, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said the unpaid debts are mostly emanating from the 2014 tripartite elections.<\/p>\n
