{"id":20257,"date":"2016-03-08T13:37:54","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T11:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=20257"},"modified":"2016-03-08T13:37:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-08T11:37:54","slug":"escom-workers-trained-in-disaster-recovery-planning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/03\/08\/escom-workers-trained-in-disaster-recovery-planning\/","title":{"rendered":"Escom workers trained in disaster recovery planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over 140 member of staff from Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) have completed a two-week long training course in Disaster Recovery Planning and Business Continuity which was taking place in Mangochi.<\/p>\n<p>The training was, among other things, aimed at equipping the members of staff with skills for identifying disaster prone areas and develop best practices for recovery and business continuity.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking when he closed the training workshop, Escom\u2019s company secretary and director of social services, Everson Sitolo, said the training will help prevent adhoc handling of disasters at the institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEscom operates in a very high risk environment of floods, dry spells and vandalism. This training has enhanced our preparedness to anticipate a disaster and find ways of mitigating the effects,\u201d Sitolo said.<\/p>\n<p>The training, said Sitolo, has been a success and that the corporation will now come up with a disaster recovery plan to guide such activities in the next 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will help minimise effects of natural disasters on Escom\u2019s customers and operations,\u201d said Sitolo.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking when he opened the training workshop earlier, Escom chief executive Officer John Kandulu described Malawi\u2019s over reliance on hydroelectric power as a risk.<\/p>\n<p>Currently the organisation is working on finding and investing in alternative sources of electricity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over 140 member of staff from Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) have completed a two-week long training course in Disaster Recovery Planning and Business Continuity which was taking place in Mangochi.
