Malawi government has come out in the open to explain the actual reasons behind Bingu National Stadium\u2019s delayed official opening in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
Ministry of Sports and Culture spokesperson, Christopher Mbukwa, has revealed that government requires an estimated K500 million\u2014outside Chinese funding\u2014to complete fully the 40,000-seater stadium.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Mbukwa said government is hoping that construction would be completed by next month.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs government, we are also concerned that the stadium has not been opened. We are hoping to source funds for the remaining projects so that we can start using the facility. But if we can get K 100 million, we might complete the sewer line and high-voltage cable connection, and the stadium would be ready for use while we complete other work,\u201d Mbukwa said.<\/p>\n
The magnificent facility has not been opened three months after Chinese contractors, Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company (Affecc), handed it over to government.<\/p>\n
With the country going through economic problems, the extra money required for the stadium has raised fears that it might take long before opening its doors.<\/p>\n
So far, no Super League team has shown interest to will not qualify as a full friendly. The Flames have not played competitively since last December.<\/p>\n
Caf is also yet to confirm the actual day of the Group L qualifier. Malawi is third in the group with one point, at par with bottom-placed Guinea, whereas Zimbabwe and Swaziland top the standings on four points. All teams in the group have played twice each.<\/p>\n
\u201cCaf confirmed in Zurich that there were a number of games that they, as Caf, will need to fix dates, so that there are four days between the matches,\u201d Nyirenda explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cMalawi \/ Guinea matches are some of the games where Caf will fix the dates. Once this is done, then we will confirm the actual date of the Flames\u2019 departure from Malawi to Conakry via Freetown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
