Awards keep the creative industry on their toes and motivate artists” said Mhango.

He said they are currently working hard and talking to the corporate world to assist them in putting up proper awards.

“Let me assure the nation that as Mum we are doing something, it’s not healthy for a country not to reward its artists. All we can say is that the government and the corporate world has to help us,” said Mhango.

The Muma Awards which were only held for two years saw several artists being awarded including old-timers in the Lifetime Achievers Awards.

However, the awards were heavily criticised by artists and fans for lacking depth and having several anomalies.

The past years have seen some awards including the Malawi Music Awards dubbed the Grandest Gathering of Celebrities which was held in 2011 but they have died a natural death.

There have also been some awards created by people who were only interested in making money and have in-turn ended up disappointing artists.

There were also awards in the Bwalo la Aluso which was created by arts associations in collaboration with Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) which rewarded the creative industry but the event died a natural death.

Mhango said the country needs to have awards on the local front which could also be a perfect foundation for getting nominations on the international platform.

“If we are to earn more nominations on the international front then we need awards on the local front which would help in preparing us,” said the Mum leader.

The country has made strides on the international platform receiving nominations in the Grammy Awards through Zomba Prison Music Project which failed to notch an award, Piksy who received a Kora Award and its event will be held in Namibia in March and Joyce Mhango Chavula, who got a nomination in the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards to be held in Nigeria this Saturday.

Mhango also said that they were in discussions with Chibuku Products Limited over the Chibuku Road to Fame Music competition.

In another development Mhango has called on the government to stick to its word to help them fasten the process of the revised Copyright Bill so that it should be tabled in Parliament.

“We have waited for the revised Copyright Bill for a longtime now, as artists we are suffering and this is why piracy is rampant because pirates are getting away having paid smaller punishments but this revised bill has stiffer penalties,” said Mhango.

While every year artists in other countries look forward to being decorated with awards, there are no proper in the country at the moment.
