British High Commissioner to Malawi, Michael Nevin, has challenged the country\u2019s insurers to play an active role in shaping the economic future of the country.<\/p>\n
He was speaking in Blantyre on Saturday during the 2016 Insurance Institute of Malawi Annual Charter Dinner held under the theme \u2018Protecting and Growing Malawi\u2019s Future\u2019.<\/p>\n
Nevin, who was guest of honour at the event said, as professionals, insurers, too, have a significant role to play in ensuring that the future of Malawi is bright.<\/p>\n
He said professionals need not to be too afraid to take part in the shaping of the country\u2019s politics.<\/p>\n
According to Nevin, despite the many challenges the country is facing, there still are plenty of opportunities that could be explored by professionals.<\/p>\n
He cited 10 factors that could provide opportunities for professionals to exploit, including the growing population and ICT development.<\/p>\n
Nevin said it is surprising to note that most Malawians think that aid and donors hold the key to Malawi\u2019s economic development.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have just presented 10 points here that present opportunities for professionals to explore. Did I mention donors? Did I mention aid?\u201d asked Nevin.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis means that we could still move forward as a country if we, as professionals, get more involved rather than just grumbling about donors and aid,\u201d said Nevin.<\/p>\n
Old Mutual Malawi acting chief executive officer, Edith Jiya, said the industry will make sure that it plays a more crucial role in the shaping of Malawi\u2019s future by exploiting the opportunities available.<\/p>\n
The charter dinner saw the institute awarding certificates to students who excelled in their insurance examinations last year.<\/p>\n
The gathering also saw Britam\u2019s Immaculate Kachapira taking over the presidency of the institute from UGI\u2019s Rex Kadzongwe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
