Where we are coming from if we are to define where we are going through. In this case, we have missed and overlooked a lot,” Molande said.

He said the argument that the country has a broken political system emanating from the poor transition from one-party to multiparty is seriously flawed.

“We cannot assume that before 1994, we had a more perfect political and economic system. Because if it was so, then by 1994 we should have had a more robust economy which would begin to decline with the coming of democracy,” he said.

Molande, however, admitted that in the 1970s Malawi economy was much better but since 1979 oil crisis and the coming of structural adjustment programmes the country’s economy has never been good.

“We have problems of colonialism that we have not solved; we have problems that started in 1994 and then democracy itself as Professor Chinsinga himself intimates has brought its own problems,” Molande said.

He said the present leadership has long term focus and Mutharika is not a leader who just wants to do things for the sake of being popular.

“He [Mutharika] wants to do right things for long term benefits. But that has a cost of not being seen to be delivering in the short term. We are dealing with long term systematic problems here,” he said.

Chinsinga said any country needs a government and leaders born out of concrete political projects not the leaders who just accidentally find themselves leading.

Government has said President Peter Mutharika is not an accidental President and the problems that the country is going through are due to some circumstances, including weather patterns not the presidency.
