{"id":18961,"date":"2016-02-17T09:14:49","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T07:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=18961"},"modified":"2016-02-17T09:14:49","modified_gmt":"2016-02-17T07:14:49","slug":"fisd-to-still-sponsor-a-football-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/02\/17\/fisd-to-still-sponsor-a-football-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Fisd to still sponsor a football team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fisd Company Limited has insisted that, despite pledging a K40 million cup sponsorship to Football Association of Malawi (Fam), the company has not given up on its wish to sponsor a football team.<\/p>\n<p>After parting ways with Wizards FC a few months ago, Fisd put the club\u2019s sponsors up for grabs to interested teams.<\/p>\n<p>However, Fisd managing director, Frank Mwenechanya, on Monday said they had received some sponsorship proposals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean that we will stop funding clubs. As we said, we are still committed to sponsoring a team,\u201d Mwenechanya said on the sidelines of the cup pre-contract signing ceremony with Fam at Mpira Village.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still looking for a place to develop a mini stadium [in Lilongwe]. Now it will start with an academy. We should also be exporting players to Europe. We need to start from the grassroots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fam president, Walter Nyamilandu, has slammed jealousy people he claimed celebrated Standard Bank Knock-Out Cup\u2019s exit.<\/p>\n<p>Nyamilandu said this before signing the pre-contract. The sponsorship is for five years, but it will be reviewed annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing how people celebrated when Standard Bank pulled out. People want to pull each other down all the time, yet this is our own country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFisd could not have come in if we had a bad record with Standard Bank. We could have loved to extend our relationship, but when they left we exchanged handshakes and said good bye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nyamilandu then called on government to empower indigenous Malawians such as Fisd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must come up with a local empowerment policy for Malawians. Let us give contracts, let\u2019s give business to companies such as these because their proceeds will remain in the country. I am sure the authorities will support this cause,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Fisd cup, whose launch will take place later this month, replaces Standard Knock-Out which pulled out last week.<\/p>\n<p>Mwenechanya, who was accompanied by officials such as Moses Chirambo and Arthur Mpama, said the five-year sponsorship was subject to review annually.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter we heard that Standard Bank Cup Knock- Out fell vacant, we thought that as a company we can come in and sponsor the cup.
