We will use other mechanisms of tracing the validity of the documents that an NGO has uploaded to support its application and when we find out that they are fake, we will not register the NGO,” said Dzimadzi.

She added that the introduction of the portal means no NGO will have an excuse for failing to register.

Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mary Shawa, said the number of NGOs at the Council for Non- Governmental Organisations in Malawi (Congoma) is double the number of NGOs at the NGO Board.

She said there also is an anomaly in the amount of money which reports indicate goes into NGOs to the point that a recent NGO mapping system found that over K25 billion is not clearly reported on.

“The portal gives us an opportunity as a country to know the number of NGOs, what they are doing, the amount of money that goes into their operations, where they are operating and where they are getting their funding from,” said Shawa.

She added that the NGO Act also requires that for an NGO to be registered, it needs to have a board of trustees, a constitution and minutes of its first committee meeting.

The Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Board has said the introduction of its NGO online registry will, among others, help it track the activities of the country’s NGOs and in the process root out bogus ones.
