The Southern Region Chess League will stage its first schools\u2019 tournament this year, courtesy of ICT Networks Limited.<\/p>\n
SRCL chess in schools\u2019 coordinator, Magret Ngugama, who is also the acting-national chess in schools coordinator, said over 20 schools have confirmed participation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis means that over 150 players from primary and secondary schools in the Southern Region will take part in the competition,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Ngugama said they were delighted with the response as some of the schools will make their debuts.<\/p>\n
Likangala Secondary and Saint Marys from Zomba, Bedir Primary, Southend Secondary and Central High School from Blantyre are some schools expected in the competition for the first time.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe confirmations that I have received, so far, indicate that chess is gaining ground in the South, and this is very encouraging,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Ngugama said individual format will be used for these games to be played over seven rounds.<\/p>\n
She said the winners will walk away with trophies, medals and chess materials.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Southern Region Chess League is focusing on equipping players with materials for the game,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n
Ngugama said ICT Networks Limited was pleased to be associated with development of chess in Malawi.<\/p>\n
\u201cICT is pleased to be associated with logical and analytical thinkers, so too is chess. They are a local technology company and would like to promote chess,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Ngugama said the players will be divided into four categories, primary girls, primary boys, secondary schools girls and secondary school boys.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
