Over 30 experienced golfers converged on Country Club Limbe on Sunday for an invitational tournament aimed at reviving seniors\u2019 golf.<\/p>\n
It was the first seniors\u2019 golf tournament after three years in the doldrums.<\/p>\n
At the end of the tournament, Phillip Phambana emerged the champion when he posted 38 points.<\/p>\n
Well-known veteran, James John Chikapa was counted in after scoring 34 points to finish second, while James Chimwaza was counted out to third place.<\/p>\n
John Magombo, who ended on fourth position with 33 points, won the nearest to-the pin on hole number 13.<\/p>\n
In the ladies\u2019 section, Beatrice Mangwana finished first with 27 points, while Lillian Kawaza was second with 20 points.<\/p>\n
Phambana said he felt on top of the world having won the tournament on its return.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels so great. This is the first seniors\u2019 tournament in over three years, and I am privileged to win it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Southern Region Senior golfers\u2019 captain, Gilbert Chirwa, said it was important to revive the competition.<\/p>\n
Chirwa noted that following the exit of expatriates from the committee, there was no support to the sport especially from indigenous Malawians.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe met last year to discuss how to revive the sport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The competition\u2019s convener, Bashir Sharrif, said they will put in place mechanisms to play regularly so that experienced golfers can pass on skills to up-and-coming players.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
