The Ministry of Information and Civic Education has said despite the introduction of digital broadcasting, media houses face the challenge of developing local content.<\/p>\n
The ministry has since urged the media houses to develop more content as viewers watch quality pictures on their television sets.<\/p>\n
Minister of Information, Jappie Mhango, made the remarks in Lilongwe on Friday during the opening of a capacity building workshop for broadcasters organised by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) and Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe greatest challenge that faces us today is the development of content to be featured on our television stations. We appreciate that broadcasting stations are striving to produce content that meet the needs of the audiences but we are not quite encouraged with the quality that we see and lack of diversity. As a nation, we can do better to produce programmes that are not only educative, informative and entertaining but also programming that meets international standards,\u201d Mhango said.<\/p>\n
He added:<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s not just focus on politics. We can do more in developing programmes that celebrate our cultural heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n
Macra\u2019s Deputy Director General Francis Bisika said that as a regulator, Macra will make sure that the media has the right capacity to air programmes that change the lives of listeners and viewers whether in education, agriculture, health and the economy.<\/p>\n
He however said Malawians need to be protected from content that is harmful to their personal livelihood, culture, health and socio-economic status.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is why as a regulator we have a fully-fledged broadcasting monitoring unit that monitors content on your broadcasting stations to assess whether it is in sync with your licence conditions,\u201d Bisika said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
