Veteran musician Wambali Mkandawire has called for support for local artists observing that most of the artists are working hard but are not supported fully.<\/p>\n
Wambali said this on Saturday after entertaining people with his classic performance at M-Theatre in Blantyre.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is need for support for local artists, there is a lot of talent here but many are working on their own without support,\u201d said the singer famed for hits\u201a Nkhujipeleka <\/em>and Zani Muwone <\/em>among others.<\/p>\n He cited South Africa-based singer, guitarist and songwriter Erik Paliani who he said has done a lot but his music has not been appreciated fully in the country.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have very good musicians who are doing amazing work but their music has not been supported. I have never heard his music being played in our country\u2019s radio stations and yet his album is very good,\u201d said Wambali.<\/p>\n He said his album Chitukutuku <\/em>which Paliani released in 2010 and earned him a South Africa Music Award (SAMA) nomination is very rich with mature music and that his songs needed to be given the platform.<\/p>\n Paliani is a guitarist, producer, and songwriter best known for his work with South African artists Zamajobe Sithole and Hugh Masekela.<\/p>\n Paliani played a key role as guitarist and producer on Zamajobe\u2019s 2004 debut album Ndawo Yami <\/em>for which he was nominated for the South Africa Music Awards (SAMA) in the category Best Joint Composition.<\/p>\n In 2006 Paliani appeared in the film Catch a Fire playing the role of a jazz guitarist.<\/p>\n Meanwhile Wambali has said his coming out for performances does not mean that he will be frequently on stage.<\/p>\n \u201cI will be available but not that frequently, my target is the international platform and at the moment I am still trying to put things together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Wambali said as a musician he has no time to organise shows but agents and others interested can organise shows and invite him.<\/p>\n He also hailed Dikamawoko for using their little resources to put together a performance that attracted not a huge audience.<\/p>\n During the concert Wambali took time out to offer a jazz session to the audience dishing out among others songs from his latest album titled Calabrash Breath<\/em>.<\/p>\n Through the album, Wambali, said he wants to create Malawian jazz which was already started by other artists but only that he has gone deeper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Veteran musician Wambali Mkandawire has called for support for local artists observing that most of the artists are working hard but are not supported fully.
