After rolling out Fast- Five hockey recently, Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) launches an In-door Hockey League\u2019s fourth edition at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre Saturday.<\/p>\n
Ham general secretary, Chigo Thindwa, said this year\u2019s league would revert to six-aside format after using the five-aside last season.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn-door hockey continues to grow from season-to-season in its competitiveness and skill-building for the hockey fraternity. Last season it registered 420 goals for the men\u2019s league compared to 250 goals in the previous year. For the women\u2019s league, it was a total of 112 goals scored compared to 101 goals in the previous season,\u201d Thindwa said.<\/p>\n
As of yesterday, eight men\u2019s teams and five ladies\u2019 teams had confirmed participation in the league which is yet to secure sponsorship.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is Ham\u2019s hope that there can finally be a cash prize for the winners. The men\u2019s and ladies\u2019 leagues have received support in terms of trophies and medals from Ham and other well-wishers in the past,\u201d Thindwa said.<\/p>\n
In preparation for the league, Ham held an umpires\u2019 course last year and last December umpires\u2014 James Bandawe and Ulemu Ngwira\u2014 officiated In-door tournaments in Durban, South Africa.<\/p>\n
Genetrix are defending both the men\u2019s and ladies\u2019 titles. On the world stage, International Hockey Federation (IHF) has also reverted to six-aside format this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
