South African lower league side, Witbank Aces, are also interested in the international right-back, Lanjesi.

Civo acting-general secretary, Charles Mwenda, on Wednesday said that while the club is desperate to keep their stars, the players have a final say. The players are still contracted to Civo.

“There are four factors that we have considered. They are in their early 20s, and it means they have much to contribute. They are also our regulars, hence it will be difficult replacing them. These are also national team players. The last factor considered is the prevailing market value,” Mwenda said.

South African agent, Martin Sekati, confirmed in a telephone interview from Johannesburg yesterday that Lanjesi was on the wanted-list of Witbank Aces.

“Spurs are on the verge of participating in National First Division play-offs, hence they have offered Lanjesi an outright contract. The problem is that Civo want K4 million,” Sekati explanation.

“No club would be willing to spend that much as the season is almost over in South Africa. There is also a club from Botswana that is eyeing Lanjesi.”

However, Mwenda insisted that Civo did not set a fee for Witbank. Bullets vice-general secretary, Kelvin Moyo, confirmed Civo’s demand for K4 million for each player.

“Our executive has to meet. It has to be a unanimous decision because if we spend too much on players’ transfers, then we might have nothing for salaries,” Moyo explained yesterday.

Zoya, who is the deputy to club captain Lanjesi, said he was still weighing the options. In the last two seasons, Football Association of Malawi, in liason with clubs, set a K3 million transfer-fee cap, which has since been discarded.

Standard Bank Knock- Out Cup champions, Civo United have pegged their regulars—defenders John Lanjesi, Emmanuel Zoya and midfielder Nelson Kangunje—at K4 million each in a last-ditch attempt to hold on to them.
