Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) has donated K1.7 million to Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) to help the association\u2019s product, Ramesh Banda, to prepare for the forthcoming ITF\/CAT Masters tournament set for Morocco in September.<\/p>\n
PIL general manager, Enwell Kadango, said the donation was meant to help Ramesh and his coach travel for ITF junior circuits set for Botswana.<\/p>\n
\u201cPIL, the major fuel importers for Malawi since 1999 has noted with appreciation the budding talent in the boy [Ramesh] as far as lawn tennis playing is concerned,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Kadango said Petroleum Importers Limited was excited to be part of history in making Ramesh Banda, a formidable player.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe training will accord him extra skills as he will play real games. All this is in preparation for the major tournament coming up in September in Morocco. Malawi can be on the map from this young talent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
LTAM, general secretary, Christopher, said t h e donation was timely because at times junior players miss out international tournaments due to lack of funding.<\/p>\n
Malawi National Council of Sports executive secretary, Georg e Jana, said they were very happy that some companies were coming forward to support what others deem as minority sport codes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis donation is quite unique because it caters for the youth unlike others that target elite athletes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) vice president, Flora Mwandira, also hailed PIL for the support.<\/p>\n
The donation was presented to LTAM at Malawi National Council of Sports boardroom on Wednesday a day before Ramesh and five other junior players left for Botswana.<\/p>\n
The s ix-member squad left the country for Botswana yesterday and other members include Linda Msiska, Dereck Gamula, Gloria Christopher, Mwaiwathu Kadammanja and Anderson Kachepa.<\/p>\n
Ramesh was selected to compete at the event after winning gold and bronze medals during the Southern Africa junior circuit \u00a0n Botswana four months ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
