{"id":17644,"date":"2016-01-27T09:19:39","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T07:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=17644"},"modified":"2016-01-27T09:19:39","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T07:19:39","slug":"mwawi-kumwenda-congratulates-diamonds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/01\/27\/mwawi-kumwenda-congratulates-diamonds\/","title":{"rendered":"Mwawi Kumwenda congratulates Diamonds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi\u2019s sole netball export, Mwawi Kumwenda, has congratulated Kukoma Diamonds for winning the 2015 Presidential Cup over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on her <em>facebook page<\/em>, Mwawi said she had been informed from her New Zealand base that the encounter was a very tight one.<\/p>\n<p>She said she was proud to be associated with a team that is rising to dominate Malawi netball but also hailed Tigresses for making the game a worthy cup final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to congratulate both Kukoma Diamonds for winning the trophy and Tigresses for putting up a gallant fight in the final that ended 41-36 at the Blantyre Youth Centre.I have been informed that the match was tight in all the quarters and a marvel for netball lovers to watch,\u201d she wrote yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>She went on to list down the entire Diamonds lineup and ended it with the sentence: \u201cCongrats girls!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mwawi then listed down the names of five Tigresses players and ended with: \u201cLuck was not on your side! I am sure that now you are even more determined to face the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To Thunder Queens and Civonets, the netball icon said, \u201cThank you for an exciting and spirited third place play off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also had time to congratulate individual players: \u201cI want to specially commend Civonets\u2019 centre Rose Mkanda, who was named player of the tournament and Diamonds shooter Alinafe Kamwala who was voted the best shooter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To the tournament\u2019s best defender Joanna Kachilika of Thunders and best centre Thandie Galeta, Mwawi said, \u201craise the game girls, and I look forward to teaming up with you again in the Malawi Queens \u2013 Our Queens Our Pride.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations to you all!\u201d she concluded<\/p>\n<p>Mwawi started her netball career with Diamonds, then known as Escom Sisters and whenever she returns home from New Zealand, she links up with the team closely.<\/p>\n<p>The team got a reward of K4 million for winning the trophy, and are looking forward to taking it to their sponsors Capital Oil Refining Industries who had challenged the ladies to win it.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Africa\u2019s sole representative in the ongoing International World Games Association Athlete of the Year 2015, Mwawi, has tripled her lead in the contest.<\/p>\n<p>With voting due to close on Sunday, the Malawian netball icon has opened a very wide gap with the rest of the other contestants, who, as of yesterday, were still struggling to reach 5,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p>If Mwawi wins the award, it will be for the first time that a Malawian has won a high profile multi-discipline award of this kind.<\/p>\n<p>She remains the only black and African athlete on the list of eighteen nominees that people across the world are voting for on a daily basis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Malawi\u2019s sole netball export, Mwawi Kumwenda, has congratulated Kukoma Diamonds for winning the 2015 Presidential Cup over the weekend.
