The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) on Friday launched its annual tree-planting exercise in Lilongwe as one way of addressing deforestation in the country.<\/p>\n
During the opening day of the exercise, a total of 5,000 seedlings were planted at Kachikhokasamba Village in Traditional Authority Tsabango in Lilongwe.<\/p>\n
In her remarks, NCIC Chief Executive Officer, Linda Phiri, said the council has earmarked 20,000 tree seedlings in this tree planting season.<\/p>\n
She said the tree-planting exercise will be extended to other parts of the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of the forest reserves have been destroyed because of infrastructure development in the country, so we need to replace some of the trees. It is crucial to pay attention to the effects of climate change by planting more trees,\u201d Phiri said.<\/p>\n
She said effects of climate change on developing nations like Malawi could be significantly reduced if all people are committed to planting more trees every year.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs players in the construction industry, we need to join hands to completely address the challenges,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Group Village Head Kachikho Kasamba hailed NCIC for encouraging people in the area to plant more trees.<\/p>\n
