Former Malawi national football team forward, Dan Chitsulo, has retired from active football in Germany to take up an acting assistant coach role at sixth-tier team, SG Koln – Worringen.<\/p>\n
In an exclusive interview from Germany on Sunday, Chitsulo confirmed to have retired from playing after 16 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter a long journey with ups and downs in the game of football, it\u2019s now time to say goodbye. It was indeed a long journey with a lot of goals. I enjoyed playing for my beloved country,\u201d Chitsulo wrote on his Facebook wall on Friday.<\/p>\n
The pint-sized former forward joined FC Cologne Reserve in 2000 from Lilongwe-based outfit, Civo United.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always thank God for the talent he gave me and all the achievements in my life. I\u2019m a happy family man because of this talent I have,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Chitsulo, who has a full-time job with the city council of Cologne, said he will apply for a coaching course in the summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am working with the city of Cologne as a supervisor for all the playing grounds and the green environment surrounding them,\u201d Chitsulo added.<\/p>\n
Chitsulo, who was scoring goals for fun at Civo, is among Malawi\u2019s few football exports to Europe. He also scored several vital goals for Flames.<\/p>\n
So far, only Greece-based, Tawonga and Young Chimodzi Jnr are the only recognised Malawian footballers in Europe. Clement Kafwafwa also spent some good years in Denmark, but retired recently. Esau Kanyenda and Heston Munthali also had stints with teams in Europe.<\/p>\n
