The planting, of course, started some days ago and today we decided to do this ceremony to make things formal,” said Kapenda.

LWB Environmental Officer, Nelson Ngoma, said the Board is trying its best to protect the catchment areas of both Lilongwe and Katete rivers so as to avert more water problems in the city.

“The problem is a bit complicated. Our catchment area is so big that we cannot monitor the activities taking place on it on our own. What we do is work with communities on their role in conserving the catchment areas.

“We also engage them by giving them alternatives which can generate income for them. For instance, we give them tree seedlings which they plant apart from helping them with bee-farming,” said Ngoma.

He then praised the Rotary Club of Lilongwe for donating the tree seedlings which he said are crucial in conserving the Board’s catchment areas for the sake of both the present and the future generations.

As concerns continue being raised on the sustainability of Lilongwe River, which Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) relies on, the utility institution has called on well-wishers to help in conserving the river.
