One of the country\u2019s financial services giants Old Mutual says it expects tough times for the economy in 2016.<\/p>\n
Old Mutual Chief Executive Officer, Edith Jiya, said in an interview that premised on poor performance of most indicators of the economy by end of last year, the future performance appears diverse.<\/p>\n
\u201c2016 starts on a very challenging note; when we look at the recent increase in the electricity tariffs, inflation rise, and the exchange rate depreciation, it is a very challenging environment,\u201d said Jiya.<\/p>\n
According to Jiya there is, however, hope for business growth if players in the various sectors of the economy remain resilient to the prevailing shocks.<\/p>\n
She said going forward, Malawi may still sail through a challenging economic environment which may, however, be addressed by concerted efforts from both the government and the private sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cNevertheless, as a business with challenges arising, obviously opportunities also do present themselves. These are the challenges we need to look at and help our clients to get value in their investment,\u201d said Jiya.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the insurance sector\u2019s outlook in particular, Jiya said for long term investments such as the pension investment, the market still presents vast opportunities.<\/p>\n
She said this gives hope to investors that amid the prevailing challenges, the future appears bright.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, there are challenges in the short term but we think those can be surmounted.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt depends on how we plan around them as businesses and also how as a country we are going to get solutions,\u201d said Jiya.<\/p>\n
According to her, the private sector has a critical role of ensuring improved productivity while calling on government to create what she rated as conducive environment for business.<\/p>\n
The Malawi economy closed the year 2015 on a low note with most indicators including GDP growth, inflation and the exchange rate performing badly, with interest rates also remaining high.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
