In a bid to improve the country\u2019s hockey standards, Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) has introduced Fast-Five hockey format which the International Hockey Federation (IHF) is advancing.<\/p>\n
The new format involves five players for each team and they play on a smaller pitch.<\/p>\n
Ham ran a pilot project on the new format last weekend at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre where 15 teams in both the men\u2019s and ladies\u2019 categories battled for honours.<\/p>\n
In the ladies\u2019 category, Genetrix A won the title after edging out Scorpions A.<\/p>\n
Alice Bandawe of Nyala Ladies was the top scorer in the division.<\/p>\n
Genetrix A also won the men\u2019s division after defeating Scorpions B in the final.<\/p>\n
The champions\u2019 forward Temwa Chirwa was also top scorer in the men\u2019s division.<\/p>\n
Ham general secretary, Chigo Thindwa, said the association was impressed with the progress of the tournament.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis format will be used at the Olympic Games in Japan. IHF is targeting the youth because it is a fast game and ideally the pitch is supposed to be surrounded by boards so that the ball doesn\u2019t go out. Therefore, the players are always running and showing their hockey skills. It is so exciting and we are so happy that we have finally introduced it in Malawi,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Thindwa added that Ham would hold a national tournament soon to create awareness about Fast-Five Hockey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
