{"id":16711,"date":"2016-01-18T09:13:17","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T07:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=16711"},"modified":"2016-01-18T09:13:17","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T07:13:17","slug":"udf-youth-want-atupele-muluzi-to-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/01\/18\/udf-youth-want-atupele-muluzi-to-resign\/","title":{"rendered":"UDF youth want Atupele Muluzi to resign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A <\/strong>group of United Democratic Front (UDF) youth in the Central Region has asked the party\u2019s president, Atupele Muluzi, to resign for alleged nepotistic practices and steering the party into oblivion.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em>The Daily Times <\/em>on Sunday leader of the group, Alex Wazili, a former close confidant of Muluzi, accused the UDF leader of lacking vision and skills to address teething administrative problems rocking the party as well as failing to explain the UDF\/ Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Wazili affirmed that the group has given Muluzi a 21- day ultimatum to call for an emergency convention or resign outrightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe seek the true meaning of the \u2018Agenda for Change\u2019 and we believe that change must begin with the leader himself embracing change. Why is he failing to answer many questions people are asking about the alliance between our party and the ruling DPP?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe party requires a new direction and this calls for elections at all levels from branches through to the National Executive Committee (Nec),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the ultimatum, the group also expressed sadness by what it calls rampant disregard of the party\u2019s constitution by Muluzi and certain members of the Nec.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not amused by the action recently taken by the Nec, which Muluzi heads, where they fired Vice President Iqbar Omar, Deputy National Women Director Zaituna Yusuf, Deputy Secretary General Gerald Mponda and others without following proper constitutional procedures. The party cannot gravitate around the Muluzi, Patel, Shaibu or Ndanga families,\u201d it reads this in part.<\/p>\n<p>Wazili further threatened that if Muluzi disregards the ultimatum and demands for his resignation, he will face a \u201cfierce rebellion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development, Padambo dismissed the group\u2019s claims, saying it does not have the mandate to give ultimatums because its \u201cmembers are not in the Nec and, therefore, ignorant of how a party functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t be cowed into bowing down to demands from non-Nec members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Padambo further said the new Nec, which is led by Muluzi, is committed to fulfilling the constitution and that before they fire somebody, they make sure that he or she is heard by the disciplinary committee.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of United Democratic Front (UDF) youth in the Central Region has asked the party\u2019s president, Atupele Muluzi, to resign for alleged nepotistic practices and steering the party into oblivion.
