{"id":16689,"date":"2016-01-18T08:59:55","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T06:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=16689"},"modified":"2016-01-18T08:59:55","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T06:59:55","slug":"hope-for-local-womens-football","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/01\/18\/hope-for-local-womens-football\/","title":{"rendered":"Hope for local women\u2019s football"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The year 2015 was one of the gloomiest for women\u2019s football in the country, with players dormant due to absence of leagues after President Peter Mutharika pulled out sponsorship of the regional leagues in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is a flicker of hope this year after the National Women\u2019s Football Association announced the re-introduction of regional leagues this year.<\/p>\n<p>The association\u2019s chairperson, Severia Chalira, said the leagues would involve eight teams in each of the three regions.<\/p>\n<p>She said each regional league would be sponsored at K3 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the best teams in each region to take part in the league to provide an opportunity for our players to actively play the game. We will be monitoring their progress to select players that will beef up the national team that we re-established last year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Chalira added that the leagues were expected to kick off in April in line with the harmonised national calendar.<\/p>\n<p>She said while the committee was still looking for sponsors for the leagues, they would still use K9 million from their K22 million annual subvention from the world\u2019s football governing body, Fifa.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the leagues, she has indicated that the Fifa-Fam Cup would return this year with the format being altered to an Under-17 competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to give young players an opportunity through this competition. We cannot develop the game if we don\u2019t have developmental competitions. When the players graduate from the Under-17 level, they will start participating in the leagues,\u201d Chalira said.<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s football has been struggling from lack of sponsorship despite enjoying massive sponsorship recently from Donnas Eggs, Matindi and several other companies.<\/p>\n<p>Malawi women\u2019s football team captain Chisomo Kazisonga and Tabitha Chawinga based in Austria and Sweden respectively are among the country\u2019s women\u2019s football success stories<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The year 2015 was one of the gloomiest for women\u2019s football in the country, with players dormant due to absence of leagues after President Peter Mutharika pulled out sponsorship of the regional leagues in 2014.
