Well-known golfers Carol Banda and Furkani Gani started the year on a high note after they emerged champions during a Sparc Systems golf tournament at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The tournament was meant for ladies, but men were also allowed to participate to make the event exciting.<\/p>\n
The tournament attracted a 45 golfers, including 10 women.<\/p>\n
Banda, playing off handicap 22, had a net score of 81 while Margaret Mukwenha, playing off handicap 25, finished on second position with a net of 82.<\/p>\n
Beatrice Mangwana, playing off handicap 25, ended on third position with a net score of 85. Doreen Kavala was fourth and Connie Muguvu was fifth.<\/p>\n
The ladies champion Banda said the competition was tough because the golf course has changed following the rains.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a wonderful start to the year. However, the course was difficult and to win I had to struggle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Blantyre Sports Club ladies section golf captain, Muguvu, said they allowed men to take part in the tournament to make it exciting and competitive.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe thank Sparc Systems for the support as we try to promote ladies golf in the country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s section, Gani was first with James Chimwaza finishing on second position while John Shonga was third.<\/p>\n
Eric Chapola ended on fourth position while Bashir Sharrif was fifth.<\/p>\n
Sparc Systems managing director, Wisely Phiri, said it was not the first time that the firm had sponsored golf.<\/p>\n
