The Muslim Supreme Council of Malawi (MSCM) has joined other religious organisations in calling upon President Peter Mutharika not to bow down to the demands of \u201cevil people\u201d who are advocating for the promotion of gay rights in the country.<\/p>\n
MSCM Secretary General, Imran Katona, said since Malawi is a God-fearing country, Mutharika should respect views of majority Malawians who he claimed are against same-sex relationships.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is sad that among us Malawians, proudly known for being God-fearing people, we have a community of people in support of consensual same-sex activities. Although that is the case, history has taught us lessons about nations that God destroyed because of the similar practices,\u201d Katona said.<\/p>\n
He said it would be disappointing to note that Malawi is among few countries around the world that tolerate homosexuality.<\/p>\n
Katona also said MSCM is against the idea to support an activity which God already declared as a sin.<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernment is aware that Malawians are against consensual same-sex activities based on our beliefs and traditions. If we follow what [some people] are saying as a democratic country, it will be against the wish of Malawians to consent to such wicked ideas,\u201d Katona explained.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the issue, Publicity Secretary for Islamic Concern, Cassim Anafi, said: \u201cWe would like to ask our elected State President Professor Peter Mutharika not to bow down to the demands of evil people who want to destroy our country.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they [want us] to do it for money let them go away with their money and leave our country safe because the punishment of God is more unbearable than the conditions these people may give to Malawi.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Tuesday this week, the General Assembly of the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) also urged government not to bow down to pressure from donor countries who are calling upon Malawi to support same-sex activities.<\/p>\n
