{"id":16308,"date":"2016-01-13T08:03:56","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T06:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.times.mw\/?p=16308"},"modified":"2016-01-13T08:03:56","modified_gmt":"2016-01-13T06:03:56","slug":"icrisat-in-seed-production-monitoring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.times.mw\/index.php\/2016\/01\/13\/icrisat-in-seed-production-monitoring\/","title":{"rendered":"Icrisat in seed production monitoring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the seed research organisations called International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat), through the Malawi Improved Seed System and Technology project, has started developing capacity to monitor seed production in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Under a project funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Icrisat has since started training inspectors from seed companies to fill the shortage of government seed inspectors.<\/p>\n<p>Icrisat has also held refresher training courses for government seed inspectors to enhance their capacity in the monitoring of seed multiplication contracted by seed companies.<\/p>\n<p>Icrisat project manager, Soka Sakaya, said the initiative is aimed at making companies supply quality seed to farmers for improved yield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeed is a key input in the production of crops and if the seed is of low quality it affects the yield.<\/p>\n<p>Through this programme, seed inspectors will be equipped to ensure that the process of seed production is following right guidelines,\u201d said Sakaya.<\/p>\n<p>The improved seed systems project involves various partners and strives to improve access to affordable and certified quality seed by farmers across the country in order to improve yields.<\/p>\n<p>The project has also helped the proliferation of seed producers to complement supplies by big companies \u2013 thereby improving access to quality seed by farmers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the seed research organisations called International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat), through the Malawi Improved Seed System and Technology project, has started developing capacity to monitor seed production in the country.
