Malawi netball has been dealt a severe blow following the death of one of the netball\u2019s icon Connis Mhone.<\/p>\n
Mhone died Monday after a short illness. She was hospitalised at Kamuzu Central Hospital last week Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Until her death Mhone was coaching Civonets and Malawi Queens under-21.<\/p>\n
Both Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) and Civonets officials said they were sad to learn of the death.<\/p>\n
Civonets chairperson Ethel Muphuwa said they were saddened by the loss of Mhone who has left indelible mark in netball circles.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Nam general secretary, Carol Bapu, said it was a bad day in netball circles.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is terrible to hear about Mhone\u2019s loss. We express our sincere sympathy to her family. She was a woman of few words. She was always ready to work and never murmured,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Late Mhone is survived by two sons and burial is expected tomorrow at Chipima in Nkhata- Bay.<\/p>\n
Mhone started her netball career in 1983 while at Mzuzu CCAP Primary School.<\/p>\n
Two years later, Mhone joined Oriental Tobacco Sisters, where she played for close to three years before joining Lilongwe-based Blue Eagles Sisters.<\/p>\n
After playing for Eagles Sisters, she crossed the floor to join Silver Netball Club and then moved to Civonets before joining Admarc Tigresses (now Complex Tigresses).<\/p>\n
At Tigresses, Mhone enjoyed the best of her career and matured as a player.<\/p>\n
During her playing days at Tigresses, the team dominated the local netball fraternity when they won all the trophies for three consecutive years.<\/p>\n
Donning Malawi national team uniform was a dream come true for her and while playing for the Malawi Queens, she was one of the reliable players and just a daring to many netball fans because of her shooting skills that defied tall defenders.<\/p>\n
She was part of the generation that helped Queens break into top 10 in the world and move to top six.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
