The Lilongwe City Council has disclosed plans to enter into a partnership with potential stakeholders to manage the dilapidated Lilongwe Community Centre Ground.<\/p>\n
In a response to a questionnaire on Friday, Lilongwe City Council public relations officer Tamara Chafunya confirmed that the joint venture is aimed at transforming the facility.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is because the council is now looking into engaging other potential stakeholders who would jointly work with the council in various projects [that include the community ground] under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement so that the facility can be fully operational,\u201d Chafunya said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Lilongwe City Council strongly believes that developments under the PPP will receive maximum financial support and encourage a sense of ownership by the citizens while at the same time this will greatly uplift the city\u2019s image.\u201d<\/p>\n
Through the PPP arrangement, the developer or operator will be given the entire right to run the facility or manage it with the supervision of the Lilongwe City Council.<\/p>\n
Chafunya further explained that the council has earmarked K5million in this financial year for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the community Hall only.<\/p>\n
In the past, the venue used to host football games including Super League matches.<\/p>\n
However, for the past four years, the venue has turned into a boxing arena only.<\/p>\n
According to the minutes of the council\u2019s fourth Extra- Ordinary Meeting held on August 6 in 2015, the Council seeks to upgrade the current ground to a modern facility.<\/p>\n
The project would consider upgrading of the facility and other structures to offices, dressing rooms and shops for sports items.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
