The Inspector General (IG) of Malawi Police Service (MPS) Lexten Kachama, says he has no comment on Malawi Congress Party (MCP) demands for fresh investigations into Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) warehouse fire.<\/p>\n
On the night of July 15 2014, fire gutted the warehouse during which Mec lost some property, including ballot papers (case exhibit) for the contested Lilongwe City South East Constituency election.<\/p>\n
Kachama told the media in Lilongwe last week that the findings after police investigations into the fire have ruled out arson as the cause for the inferno, a declaration that the main opposition party has negatively received.<\/p>\n
MCP spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, has demanded a fresh forensic investigation into the matter, describing the findings as originating from questionable investigations and investigators.<\/p>\n
In an interview on yesterday, Kachama said MPS\u2019 position on Kabwila\u2019s reaction is \u201csimply no comment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI gave out the findings of the investigation which we did. But on Ms. Kabwila\u2019s reactions on what I said, my short and straightforward answer is; I have no comment. Let me reserve my comment on what she said,\u201d Kachama said.<\/p>\n
Mec spokesperson, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said any reservations on the preliminary findings should be forwarded to the investigators.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the fire incident happened, Mec referred the issue to the competent authority, the Malawi Police Service, for proper investigation. Any reservations on the preliminary findings of the investigations should be directed to the investigators,\u201d Mwafulirwa said.<\/p>\n
He also said apart from the preliminary findings, Mec has not been issued with the final report so far.<\/p>\n
Just hours after the incident, Mec and the MCP, whose May 2014 Parliamentary election candidate for Lilongwe City South East, Ulemu Msungama, challenged Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate, Bently Namasasu\u2019s victory, said they suspected arson.<\/p>\n
